Great article. I read about his football connection when reading a book about "muscular Christianity." Is there anything TR hasn't influenced? He also wrote one of his sons saying it was better to be on the B football squad and get good grades than be on the A squad and have poor grades. I appreciate the balance he put between intellect and physical activity. We need both. Looking forward to your next newsletter.
Such good advice! You’re right that TR saw books and nature/physical exercise going hand-in-hand—nourishment for both mind and body. I especially appreciate that it’s something he passed down to both his sons and his daughters. I know his daughter Ethel loved literature and regularly recited poetry as well as enjoying the strenuous life. Well into her seventies, she was doing harder hikes than people half her age!
Gotta love TR’s broad interests.
Having a healthy motivation for physical exercise is very important!
